EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of June 30, 1955:

*The University of Cambridge has awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy to David Hugh Michael, son of Mr Arthur Michael, of Gladstone Road, Barry.

*Mr Arthur Bennett, 48-year-old second son of Mrs A M Bennett, of Colcot Road, Barry, and the late Mr John Bennett, was invested with the OBE, which he received in the Queen"s Birthday Honours List.

*Barry Town began their tour of Sweden on Sunday with a match - their toughest in the programme - against the First Division side, Sandviken.

*The Rev T R Lovell, who was accepted for the Methodist Ministry from the Penarth and Barry circuit, is to be ordained at the forthcoming Methodist Conference in Manchester on July 7.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of July 3, 1980:

*Three 11-year-old girls, Sian Jones, Natalie Wood and Jacqueline Wells, from Gibbonsdown Junior School, have become the first pupils of the school - open since January last year - to gain sporting honours.

*Mrs Diane Evans took first place, out of 34 entries, to win the Rosemary Winstone Trophy for country wines at the last meeting of the Barry Wine and Beermaking Circle.

*The eldest daughter of Barry News reporter Ken Littler has gained a first-class honours degree of the University of Wales.

*Hamard Catering Ltd, of Cardiff Road Industrial Estate, Barry, has awarded £50 travel scholarships to two 21-year-old Cardiff catering students.
