Parking

I WILL be 50 next birthday and despite a problem with both knees and a minor heart condition, I would never consider parking in a disabled space as I am fortunate enough to enjoy good-health generally.

On Saturday, while taking my 88-year-old mother to Lidl"s. I noticed a young man, late 20s to 30s and with a child, pull into the last disabled parking space.

I commented to him how he could face a fine if parking without a disabled badge.

What then ensued was a torrent of abuse from this person, he told me there were no other spaces.

This was not true - it simply meant he had to walk from the other end of the car park.

Better he as an able bodied man do this, than an infirm person for whom the parking is designated.

I was accused of causing trouble on a lovely day, told to get a life, a few choice four letter words were used, and I was told his wife would sort me out if she were there.

Oh well, it"s all in a day"s work.

My father is in hospital at the moment, and my mother certainly has her share of emotional stress.

She, in her interminably positive way, told me to not bother, he wasn"t worth it, and you know, she is right.

In fairness to the man, he did move his car from the disabled spot - it was just a pity he parked there in the first place and caused this unpleasantness.

He did however, as he was walking across the car park, show me his middle finger and call me a whore! I didn"t know I had changed my profession.

I make no apology for standing up for the people who are disabled and rely on the provided disabled parking spaces, and would urge anyone else to do the same.

Who knows, one day that man may be the one who needs a disabled parking space, and there won"t be one because a young fit person can"t be bothered to walk from the other end of the car park.
