Golden day for Andrew

BARRY'S Andrew Selby has won the gold medal in the Four Nations boxing tournament held in Aberdeen.

Andrew, aged 16, the current British Champion, was representing Wales at 48 kilos.

In the semi-finals he proved too good for Scottish champion Steven Tiffiney, and ran out a comfortable winner.

The following day the Barry man met England's Champion Lee Wood and was in terrific form, throwing combinations from every angle to win every round and secure the gold medal for Wales.

His next match will be in Hungary, when he represents Wales in the European Championships on June 16.

Andrew, a former pupil of Barry Comprehensive School, has won seven Welsh titles and two British titles and is trained at Splott ABC by Pat Mahony.

His ambition is to one day turn professional.

Andrew and his brother Lee are both squad members for Wales and live at Barry Road, Barry.

Lee, aged 18, also boxed in Aberdeen and was very unlucky to lose by a score of 12-11 to the Scottish champion in the semi-finals.

Many observers thought he had won the bout, but it wasn't to be.

Nevertheless, Lee came away with a bronze medal, which was a fine performance.

Everyone at Splott ABC is proud of Andrew and wish him the best in Hungary.
