Dinas notch up season's first win

FIRSTS

LOOKING to post their first win of the season, Dinas Powys 1st XI opened the batting and scored a more than respectable 201 for the loss of nine wickets at Creigiau on a difficult wicket last Saturday.

The main contributors were Boffin with a brief innings of 37, Bussell, who was run out through no fault of his own for 41, Smith 38, Ford 17 and Wingren 26 not out.

The Villagers began brightly in the field, as Wingren ran out one of the Creigiau openers in the second over, but then despite some fine bowling by H Marks and D Boffin, the home side took their score past 100 without further loss - although the required run rate was creeping up.

Joel Evans was brought into the attack for what he believes was his first bowl for the Firsts.

Following his first-bowl beamer he acquitted himself admirably, and along with Islam put further pressure on the Creigiau batsmen who were finding it difficult to score on a dubious wicket.

Creigiau eventually ended their innings 40 runs short on 161-7 and Dinas Powys had secured their first all-important win after two previous near-misses, leaving them to contemplate what could have been a perfect start to the season.

SECONDS

AFTER a disappointing wash-out at Newport last week, Dinas Powys Seconds awaited the visit of Vale to Parc Bryn-y-Don.

On a cold and blustery afternoon Dinas were made to bat first and got off to the worst possible start, with both openers going cheaply.

Resistance was put up by Second team misfit Geoff Colley (37) and a watchful Ram Patel (11), but once Colley had fallen to a sharp catch Dinas were always going to be up against it.

A strong batting line-up failed to click in some difficult conditions that were not helped by impressive Vale bowling.

Only Jason Harries posed any further threat to the opposition with a well-crafted 22.

Last pair of Neil Thomas and Basher ensured valuable bonus points for remaining unbeaten at the close, which saw the Villagers muster 129-9.

In reply it was Dinas who started the brighter, with Mike Lowe clean bowling one of the Vale openers with only 4 on the board. However runs came quickly for the opposition and the Villagers knew that unless wickets were taken regularly the target they had set was not going to be enough.

An improved effort in the field gave the bowlers something to work with, but despite further wickets from Colley, Basher and Harries Vale prevailed to knock off the runs for the loss of four wickets.

Mike Lowe was again the pick of the bowlers with 1-18 off his nine overs.

Dinas Powys would like to thank this week's match ball sponsors PDM Catering (07976 157943).
