A POPULAR playgroup was forced to close last week after the building it was occupying became too costly to maintain.
Cadoxton Playgroup, on Vere Road, Barry, was occupying a building in the grounds of Cadoxton House, owned by The Vale of Glamorgan Council.
The council has relocated the adult education classes that were held in Cadoxton House, but as the playgroup is a private business, the council is not obligated to find it alternative accommodation.
The playgroup had been open for 12 years and there were 20 children on the register.
Sian Swinton, who has been playgroup manager for seven years, is sad that the playgroup is closing down.
She said: "Every day has been fun.
"We have children here from all walks of life and the parents have been so supportive."
Keri Newman, whose two-year-old daughter Georgia attends the playgroup, said: "It's a shame that it has got to go as it is so handy.
"It has a great atmosphere and the kids love it."
Only a few of the children who attended the playgroup have a place waiting for them at another nursery. Most of them are due to start school in September.
