Sailor's ditty

I WRITE regarding the recent ceremony of the granting of the Freedom of the Vale of Glamorgan to the Merchant Navy Association on April 16.

After the ceremony was concluded and as the scene changed, I wondered if any seaman (almost three sheets to the wind) would rise to his feet and ask his friends to join him in singing the 'Old Ship' song.

There was not a murmur going around. I wondered did they all not know that ditty?

A Sailors Memories:

Goodbye ol ship o mine,

No more we'll cross the line,

For your days are through

Sailing over the blue

Goodbye ol ship o mine.

The ports we called at in the ocean

Brings back fond memories of you,

Marry Ann I'd give all the world just to keep you

But I'm just a poor sailor man.

When they break you up at dawn

In the yard where you were born,

They will break part of a sailor's heart,

Goodbye ol ship o mine.
