ON Sunday, May 15, Sully Sailing Club was pleased to welcome distinguished guests, former members and numerous current members to the official opening of its new clubhouse, in the dinghy compound on the foreshore at Sully.
Dinghy races were held in Sully Bay before and after the opening ceremony, and with beautiful weather these were very well supported.
The new clubhouse was partly funded through a grant from Sportlot Wales.
Commodore Roger Dykes welcomed guests and members and introduced Chris Basten, vice- chairman of the Welsh Yachting Association, who congratulated the club on its new facilities and the completion of the clubhouse project.
The official opening was carried out by Bob Lang, a long-standing member of the Sully Sailing Club committee who took responsibility for organising fundraising through the annual Cardiff Boat Jumble held in March at Atlantic Wharf, and was also project manager for the clubhouse building project.
Bob thanked all those who had contributed time and financial support to the clubhouse building programme, including Sportlot Wales, the Vale Council and Sully Community Council.
He then provided a fascinating outline of the development of the sailing club since it was founded in the 1970s. The new clubhouse replaces a wooden changing shed, and provides Sully sailors with excellent changing facilities, showers and storage for the club safety boat, together with a meeting room.
* The club sails a mixed fleet of dinghies and anyone interested in joining should contact the club secretary on 029 2051 2897.
