Anger over phone mast plan

RESIDENTS on a Barry housing estate are angry about proposals to increase the number of antennae on a mobile phone mast near their homes.

The phone mast is situated in the grounds of Barry Technical College, but is also within yards of The Heathers, where a large number of children live and play.

Communication giants Orange currently own the mast, but the company is considering applying to the council to share it with Vodafone and 02.

Angela Homer, who was speaking on behalf of a number of residents, said: "While the experts cannot agree whether and at what levels electro-magnetic radiation can affect humans, there are many who believe that a precautionary approach should be adopted.

"Should our health be put at possible risk by waiting for proof of harm beyond all reasonable doubt, before preventative action is taken?

"Or should action be taken as a precaution before any conclusive evidence is found to prevent any potential harm?"

Local MP John Smith is on their side.

He said: "I'm very concerned about the sudden arrival of masts throughout the town, with what appears to be very little regulatory control about where they are going and how many there are.

"I think it's something that we need to look at much more carefully.

"Science is as yet undecided about the risks involved, but residential and parental concerns have to be taken into account.

"My sympathy and concerns lie with the residents, and not with the mobile phone company."
