WRVS would like to extend sincere thanks to all volunteers who gave their time and commitment to The Women"s Service for Air Raid Precautions (WVS) during World War II.
This service was established in 1938 at a time when Civil Defence was at the top of the political agenda, and by 1941 had one million members in the UK. During the war 241 members were killed while on duty.
Some of your readers may remember WVS wartime activities such as our canteens, hospital trolleys, clothing distribution and looking after refugees and evacuees.
During the war years our Services Welfare officers followed the troops around the globe, and today we still provide support to armed services personnel - even in Basra.
Although known as WRVS nowadays, we still have some active members who joined us during the war and have given many years of service and dedication to communities across Wales.
Some 8,000 WRVS members provide services in every community in Wales, and our aim is essentially to assist people maintain their independence and dignity in their homes and communities, especially in later life. Civil defence is once again on the agenda in this age of terror threats, and WRVS has over 10,000 trained emergency service volunteers ready to help in any community crisis.
Today WRVS volunteers represent all sections of the community in Wales. Anyone over 14 can apply to join and we are actively recruiting.
If any readers would like to find out more about our projects in their community, please call our enquiry line on 0845 601 4670, or visit us at wrvs.org.uk
Thank you
