Firsts falter, but its better for Seconds

WANDERERS FIRST TEAM V GIRLINGS CENTURIONS

ON a windy afternoon, Barry Wanderers Firsts made the trip to Girlings Centurions of Cwmbran.

Upon losing the toss, visiting skipper Fenton was invited to field. He and Stuart Jones opened the attack with good pace and movement.

In the 11th over Jones took his first wicket, getting Griffiths caught behind by Barnes for 14, swiftly followed by another caught behind and finishing with figures of 12-3-36-2.

Girlings' main player Smith was in devastating form, earning 77 off just 44 balls. Once Richard Johnson bowled him, Girlings offered little further resistance and their last eight wickets fell for just 28 runs.

Johnson finished on superb, jug-providing figures of 8.4-1-35-5, plus Jimmy Hassett mopping up at the other end with 2-0-7-3. A superb recovery by Wanderers with Girlings finishing on 176 all out.

The reply began with Andrew Ferguson (25) and Stuart Hardisty (12) putting on 46 for the first wicket.

Stuart Jones (26) and Tim Sanders (18) put on 42 for the fourth wicket, but when Jones fell Wanderers fell short by 30 runs.

All in all a disappointing performance against a side who bowled OK and fielded very well.

BARRY WANDERERS 2ND XI V PENARTH 4TH XI

On Saturday, May 14, Wanderers welcomed Penarth for their first home game at Hayes Point (nee Sully Hospital) in good, if overcast, conditions for the match. Penarth won the toss and elected to bat.

Both Toozer and Walters bowled well, each taking a wicket. Penarth's skipper P Ward came to bat and, with wickets falling at regular intervals, batted through the innings scoring an excellent 80. He was finally bowled by P George on the last ball of their innings.

Penarth finished on 156 for 9, a reasonable score on this wicket. All Wanderers' bowlers contributed with P George, taking 3 for 26.

Wanderers lost an early wicket, which brought P George in to join Smith. A profitable partnership achieved 57 runs until Smith was adjudged lbw on 27.

E Toozer came to the crease and, with some quality batting, George and Toozer took Wanderers past the winning post with nine overs to spare.

Penarth 156 for 9: P Ward 80, D Slugg 8 overs 1-21, D Slugg 23.

Barry Wanderers 159 for 2: P George 61no, P George 3-26, E Toozer 38no, L Walker 2-30.

Barry Wanderers won by eight wickets.

WANDERERS V COGAN - MIDWEEK

BWCC opened up their midweek league campaign with a comprehensive beating of Cogan Chiefs.

Fielding first, BWCC bowled superbly, backed up with some excellent fielding. Cogan did themselves no favours and were skittled for just 78.

Peter Beckett, 4-0-15-4 and skipper Mike Denning 3-0-5-3 were the pick of the bowlers. Anthony Barrett who kept wicket wonderfully, shows great promise for the future.

The reply was no bother, Coleman looking comfortable on 32 not out and ably assisted by Stuart Jones.

Wanderers victorious by eight wickets.
