Calm weather is a blow for competitors

NATIONAL championships for the increasingly popular Soling class of sailboats was held in the Bristol Channel off Barry over three days recently.

With boats travelling to the town from as far away as Fleetwood in Lancashire and Fort William in Scotland, a good weekend of sailing was anticipated. Unfortunately, winds were disappointingly light with no sailing possible at all on day one.

With the race committee working hard after that to set courses in soft breezes, seven races were eventually held - although meaningful numbers of crews failed to finish each time because of lack of drive.

Overall winners were visiting boats Foxy Cockatoo, taking the national title for the third year in a row, Mr Crusty and Buzz.

Earning a creditable fourth place was Seven (Mark Fisher, BYC), followed in the results table by other local boats Sammi Soling (Hugh Davies), Jackpot (David Brooks), Marshalla (Martin Bowmer), Madcap (David Jenkins), Billy Budd II (Chris Howe) and Elusive (Mike Hartwell).

"Have a go and see if you like it" is the theme of the regular days put on for local residents by members of Barry Yacht Club, who make their cabin cruisers available for the event.

This year's Introduction to Sailing and Rowing takes place at the club, based on Jackson's Bay, on Saturday, June 4.

Armchair sailors are invited to get on a boat and get afloat. There is no requirement to own a sailboat in order to join BYC, because there is an associate membership grade for those who wish just to form the crew.

To reserve a place for an afternoon's sailing or rowing experience, contact the club on 01446 735511 or leave a message on the website www.barryyachtclub.co.uk

l The club has added to its fleet by buying three Celtic longboats. Rowing these well-designed craft has become a popular sport and at Barry YC, participation is open to both men and women.

The ladies' team and the mixed team acquitted themselves well against more experienced opposition when they entered their first competitive event recently.

These longboats will also be available on the day. Early booking is advised in order to avoid disappointment.
