New Mayor is also 'first lady' Head

THE Vale of Glamorgan Council has elected its first woman Mayor.

Labour councillor Margaret Alexander represents the Buttrills Ward in Barry.

Barry-born Cllr Alexander is a retired teacher.

Expressing her pride at being the first woman mayor since the Vale unitary authority was established in 1996, Cllr Alexander said: "I feel I have not so much smashed through the glass ceiling as struggled through a sky light in the attic."

Cllr Alexander, whose Consort will be Bonnie Bellis, has chosen Diabetes UK and ValePlus as her nominated charities.
