Barry Wanderers Cricket Club entertained Sully Centurions at Hayes Point for a friendly match, sponsored by Diane Gist.
Losing the toss, skipper Fenton was asked to field by Sully skipper Dave Sylvester. On an excellent wicket, Stuart Jones and Fenton opened with some pacy accurate bowling, but with no success.
The change of pace through bowlers Elwyn Toozer and Andy Furnham did the trick, with Toozer in the wickets in his first over, and Furnham in his second.
With Toozer taking two more, the Centurions were reeling on 45 for 4.
There was excellent support bowling from Coleman and young Tim Sanders, who got the prize wicket of Aussie Nathan Gage, brilliantly caught in the deep by Stuart Jones for 30, and superb fielding all round, including a stunning catch from new recruit Stuart Hardisty.
Bruce was still battling away for Sully and ended on 44 not out, motoring the Centurions along to 162 for 6 off their allotted 40 overs.
The Wanderers" reply began with Smith and Hardisty moving the score along to 41, when Smith was run out for 25. Gage and young Patel were bowling superbly and the Wanderers struggled against them.
Stuart Jones scored 11, but with Swannick (0), Brian Gist (8) and Mark Ellis (1), the Wanderers were up against it at 90 for 6. However, Pete Coleman (22 not out) and Andy Fenton (49 not out) had the desire to win and smashed the ball all over the park to ensure a fantastic win by four wickets.
On Sunday, the Wanderers entertained Ponthir in their long-awaited return to the Welsh Cup, sponsored by Dan Evans of Barry and Penarth.
Skipper Fenton won the toss and elected to bat. Ponthir skipper Watkins opened the bowling and was on the spot with every ball, finishing with amazing figures of 9-4-7-4, taking the wickets of Andrew Ferguson (3), Anthony Barratt (0), Ed Sherriff (0) and Stuart Jones (2). The Wanderers were reeling on 19 for 4.
Richard Johnson (38) and Coleman (18) added a vital 52 for the fifth wicket, and with useful contributions from Mike Denning (14) and Chris Barnes (13), plus another aggressive innings from Andy Fenton (40), including three consecutive sixes, the Wanderers posted a useful score of 168 all out from their 45 overs.
Jones (7-1-1-33-1) and Coleman (9-0-28-1) opened the attack with a good variation of pace and spin, with each bowler taking a wicket.
Change bowlers Rowlands (6-0-27-0), Fenton (9-1-22-2) and Johnson (8-0-39-1) bowled well. Opening bat Wilson (49) and number four Spinetti (53) were the main contributers for Ponthir, plus 26 wides due to strict umpiring.
Ponthir were victors by four wickets, with a few balls to spare. All in all, a superb performance against a side several divisions above Barry Wanderers.
On Monday, the Wanderers entertained Lisvane at Hayes Point, in a game sponsored by Broad Street Garden Centre of Barry. The visitors won the toss and asked skipper Dave Smith to bat.
The decision looked a fine one with the skipper (6) and fellow opener Tony Swannick (3) back in the pavilion with just 15 on the board. A swift 19 from Stuart Jones, 10 from Steve Norman and an excellent 31 from Chris Sanders avoided a low total and the Wanderers finished their innings on 127 all out - probably 20 runs shy of what they would have liked.
The reply began well, with Stuart Jones taking two quick wickets (8-5-8-2) in a superb spell of bowling, and, similarly to the Wanderers, Lisvane were in early trouble at 16 for 2.
A stand of 80 from Martin (53) and Williams (28) brought Lisvane within 30 runs of their target, wholly gettable off their last 13 overs.
However, Andy Furnham (6.1-0-19-3) and Chris Sanders (6-1-14-2) had other ideas. Backed up with some simply fantastic fielding, including run-outs from Swannick, Jones and a direct 1-stump hit from Furnham Lisvane were all out for 115. Wanderers won by 12 runs.
