Result may prove crucial to survival

DINAS POWYS 2 SKEWEN ATHLETIC 0

IT was vital for Dinas Powys FC that they took something from this penultimate Welsh League Division 1 game of the season, especially as it is not yet known how many sides will be relegated, and this result may prove to be very important.

The first 30 minutes were even, with neither side able to put together any worthwhile chances on goal.

But for the remainder of the first half, Dinas started to dominate and created a number of chances, most falling to Peter Lewis.

The first, in the 37th minute, came from a Leigh Vick pass to Lewis, whose shot was turned away for a corner.

A minute later, the same players combined, but this time a defender was able to clear Peter's goalbound shot.

A couple of minutes later, from a Dinas throw, Nathan Hosgood fed Lewis, whose shot was pushed around the post by the Skewen keeper, who then had to punch clear from the resulting corner, only to see the ball fall to Jason Cowan, whose shot ran just wide of the post.

Cowan was not to be denied and within a minute, he won a tackle on the half way line and ran 40 metres, before planting the ball wide of the keeper for the first goal.

Dinas continued to dominate and scored their second on the stroke of half time, when Hosgood jinked between two defenders in the penalty area and was brought down for a clear penalty, scored by Vick.

The second half saw Skewen attacking with a lot more purpose and Richie Johnson, in the Dinas goal, had to be alert and the defenders in front of him needed to play well, to keep them at bay.

Dinas were still able to create chances with Nathan Hosgood and Peter Lewis going close.

In the closing minutes of the game, Dinas introduced youth team player Marc Mills for his first team debut and he almost wrapped the game up with a fierce shot which flew just over the bar.

* In the Welsh League Reserve East, Dinas Powys Seconds crashed 6-1 to UWIC. In the Vale League the Thirds were without a game.
