Quadruple honours for school

BARRY Comprehensive U13s and U15s basketball teams won the title of county champions for their age groups.

The basketball season started early in January, with all year groups participating in a league system with schools from the area.

Although all year groups had considerable success in the league, it was the Under 13s and 15s that impressed most throughout the season.

The U13s, coached by Matthew Ingle, won their league comfortably, with comprehensive victories over Bro Morgannwg, Cowbridge and Llantwit Major schools.

Many of the boys in the year group had the opportunity to play in one or more of the matches and all the participants displayed a very positive attitude.

In particular, Lee Baldock, Anthony Jones and Curtis Matthews demonstrated good technical ability, scoring a high number of points between them in each of the three games.

The U15s, coached by Leighton Coles, also won their league with impressive victories over Llantwit Major, Bro Morgannwg, Glyn Derw and Cowbridge.

It was evident that the time spent on set plays within practice sessions had an extremely positive effect in all four games.

Many points were converted from these set plays and Nathan Hougham in particular displayed good, all-round ability on the court.

As both the U13s and U15s won their respective leagues, they were formally invited to compete in the County Championships at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.

Both teams were to play one game of eight-minute quarters against an opposing school and the winner would then hold the title of county champions for that particular age group.

The U13s played against Bro Morgannwg for the title.

The year eight team quickly took control, building up a 16-3 lead after the first quarter, going on to win by 33 points to 10, with a great team performance.

Special mention to Lee Baldock, Levi Cullinane and Joe Wood, who all contributed greatly to the high score.

The U15s were drawn against Llantwit Major in the final and were expecting a tough game, having already faced Llantwit in the league matches.

However, a magnificent team performance, again littered with set plays from training practices, carried the year 10 team to a 60 points to 25 victory.

Both teams were than presented with winners' medals and shields for their tremendous efforts and success.

It was a great performance by the Barry Comprehensive U13s and U15s and both teams thoroughly deserve their county titles.
