Social Club: Closure now definite

A SOCIAL club will be closed after more than 40 years at the heart of the community.

Honourary members of the Dow Corning Social Club on Cardiff Road have had to accept that their club is closing after a vote was taken in which they had no say.

Only life members and ordinary members were able to vote, under the club's constitution. The club will now close at the end of May.

Long time honourary member John Lake said: "We are very disappointed at the vote but there is nothing we can do. We only found out because a notice was put on the board.

"This club has been a part of the community for more than 40 years. There is bingo for pensioners each week and dancing. Where will they go when it closes? All the skittles teams will also have to find another place to go.

"It is only recently that it has been running at a loss. We were stopped from hiring out the rooms for functions so that meant a huge percentage of the profits were cut."

A spokesperson for the Dow Corning Social Club committee said: "There was a sizable majority who voted in favour of closing the club.
