50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of March 31, 1955:

* The Jubilee Dinner of the Barry Twentieth Century Club, held at Unity Hall on Thursday proved a most successful evening, with 130 members and guests attending.

* Speaking at the Barry Memorial Hall on the occasion of his installation as President of the Welsh Federation of Headteachers, J A Hare (Gladstone Secondary Modern School) deplored the tendency to consider these schools as dealing with second-rate pupils.

* A return visit by the IFK team of Stockholm, organised by Barry Town AFC, started well on Monday when the Swedes put up a good performance in the opening match of their tour at Worcester.

* After 43 years' service in the Ministry of Labour, the last four and a half of which he spent as manager of the Barry Employment Exchange, Mr G B Davies, of Norton Avenue, Cardiff retired today (Thursday).

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of April 3, 1980:

* Staff of the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council have lifted sanctions following a local settlement, which will end the two-week dispute involving the authority's white collar workers.

* The Barry Town Council, whose efforts to establish a local crematorium at the old chapel at Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery were thwarted by objections from local residents, are embarking on a new feasibility study.

* The presentation of the Queen's Guide Badge to Miss Jacqueline Barclay, aged 16, of Porthkerry Road, Barry, was held recently in the 10th Barry Guide Hall.

* Mr and Mrs Watson of Barry, with slides of a Baltic cruise, entertained members of the Caodxton WRVS Darby and Joan Club on Tuesday week.
