Rowers make oarsome return

BARRY Yacht Club has brought rowing back to the town after a gap of many years.

Teams from the Barry club, using Celtic longboats, took part in the Heads of the Taff event in Cardiff Bay, with courses laid for four and eight kilometre races starting in Sophia Gardens.

Celtic longboats are 24 feet in length, made from low-maintenance fibreglass with built-in buoyancy and using carbon composite oars.

They take four people and a cox and can be used for racing, for training or simply for recreation purposes.

A chilly wind made life slightly uncomfortable for the women's team which managed a creditable third place.

Training over recent months clearly paid dividends.

Following lunch, a mixed team took to the water in an event involving nine teams from as far afield as West Wales and Watchet.

Fifth place was an encouraging reward for the Barry club's efforts, giving cause for optimism as the longboat season unfolds.

* Longboat rowing is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. It offers an opportunity for people of all ages and both sexes to participate. No previous experience is necessary. You can get fit while having fun and Barry Yacht Club's excellent facilities are available for those taking part.
