THE fishing for Sea View Lads Angling Club from both shore and boats has been difficult and patchy for the past few weeks with more anglers going home empty handed than those catching fish.
The February boat trip was an exercise in boredom with only six anglers weighing in, with a miserly top weight of 8lb being returned by the winner Peter Barron.
Shore catches too were down for most anglers, reflecting the lean fishing during the month - although it was good to see a late run of codling at last reach our shores.
The onset of spring, however, has brought with it hope and the first signs of the long awaited summer species.
Rays, dogs and spurs have helped liven things up and bring a smile to our faces again.
Mike Langford showed that class and local knowledge counts when he won back-to-back competitions with two bags of codling, including an impressive five fish bag of 10lb 8oz that narrowly pipped another top gun, Stringfellow and his Thornback ray of 10lb 1oz to second place.
Royston Harding, Richard Lougher and Kev Gardner also maintained a regular presence in the top six.
The March boat trip was buoyed up by a pack of Spurdog, including a tremendous new club record of 16lb 12oz for Colin Gimblett.
The latest doubles match was hindered by easterly winds and a lack of fish but Jody Velda stole the show with an impressive mixed bag that included a spotted ray of 4lb 11oz, rockling, dogfish and whiting making a combined winning weight of 8lb 2oz.
Finally, the recent auction night was a great success and once again resident auctioneer, Roy Bailey made the evening one to remember - well done Roy.
