CAMPAIGNERS fighting to stop mobile phone giants O2 building a mast near a Barry primary school have gathered a petition containing more than 1,000 signatures in just 14 days.
Christine Thomas, of the Parents and Friends Association of All Saints Church in Wales School, said: "The response has been amazing and just underlines the strength of opposition to this proposal."
Mrs Thomas handed over the petition to Cllr Anthony Hamilton, who opposes the mast, outside the school gates this week, to pass it on to O2.
A letter sent by 02 to residents in the Cwm Talwg area on January 28 asked for comments on the proposal before the company submits a planning application. O2 wants to install a 15-metre mast in Cleddau Way, a stone's throw from All Saints School.
Cllr Anthony Hamilton said: "The outcome of the Stewart report into these masts shows that there is no conclusive evidence that they are safe. We feel this site is particularly unsuitable in view of its close proximity to a school. We already have one mast in the neighbourhood near Barry College.
Christine Thomas, who has two children at All Saints Church School, said: "There is no conclusive evidence to prove that these masts are not harmful.
