Four receive big fines for waste dumping

THREE family members and a waste contractor must pay fines totalling more than 12,000 following persistent illegal waste activities at a site at Gilbert Gardens, Gilbert Lane, Cadoxton, Barry.

Plant and vehicles worth approximately 40,000 were also ordered to be forfeited to the Environment Agency, following the case at Newport Crown Court on Friday, March 11, 2005.

The prosecutions were brought by Environment Agency Wales following a major investigation with police support.

Robert Stanley James of Gilbert Gardens, Cadoxton, was fined 3,000 on each of four offences relating to knowingly causing controlled waste to be deposited on land where a Waste Management Licence was not in force. He was further ordered to pay prosecution costs of 10,000.

Simon Craig James, his son, also of Gilbert Gardens, faced four similar charges and he was ordered to undertake 180 hours Community Service and pay prosecution costs of 1,500.

Nicola Louise Alger, the daughter of Robert Stanley James, formerly of Gilbert Gardens, was fined 150 on each of two similar offences and was ordered to pay 200 costs.

Wayne Spears, a waste contractor of Northcliffe, Penarth, was fined 250 for one offence and was ordered to pay 250 costs.

The defendants pleaded guilty to the charges.
