Angry protests against closure of social club

A CLUB which has been at the heart of the community for more than 40 years is on the brink of closing, according to honorary members.

Some members of Dow Corning Sports and Social Club were protesting for the second time in two weeks at the company's gates on Cardiff Road. They carried coffins and banners outside the Dow Corning Plant.

Honorary member Alec Peterson has been a member of the social club himself for 36 years.

He said: "This club is part of the community and has been for many years.

"We raise money for charity - but our most recent cheque presentation to Ty Hafan may well be the last one. We collected 2,150 from a darts marathon.

"At Easter and Christmas we have special parties for the children and give them presents. There are skittles clubs who play out of the building, and they have not been informed of the possible closure of the club.

"We were under the impression that the area was to be used as a fitness gym but we don't think that is the case now."

Member Judith Dyer had booked the function room for her son's wedding reception but had to cancel it because of the uncertainty.

She said: "It will be difficult to book somewhere else at such short notice as the wedding is in May."
