Unsung heroes deserve support

BARRY'S unsung heroes are the backbone of our community according to Mayor June Germon, who is throwing her support behind the Citizen of the Year competition.

The Town Councillor told the News, the official media sponsor of the contest, how important this type of recognition is.

She said: "The kind of person who gives their time and their attention so selflessly, not just to family members but very often to complete strangers, is not the kind of person who looks for public applause.

"And that is why it's so vital we give these individuals the appreciation they warrant.

"There are so many of these deserving people living in our community that a competition like Citizen of the Year is destined to be a success. It's such a worthy thing to do.

"This is my second term as Mayor, the last being in 1997 to 1998. During both terms I have met such incredible people while I've been attending functions and visiting community groups.

"You really get an insight into how dedicated people are - from volunteers to those who just go that extra mile in whatever they do, especially in the caring profession.

"We have such exceptional people living in our midst and they should be recognised for their achievements and their commitment.

"If there is anyone considering putting forward a nomination, whether it's a friend, family member, caring neighbour or colleague, but is unsure whether they should - don't hesitate. If you think they deserve to be praised for whatever they do, then enter them in to this competition.

"Last year, the prize was a fantastic trip to San Francisco. This year, it's 1,500 cash for the winner to do with as he or she wishes.

"But more that the prizes on offer, just knowing that their efforts are appreciated would probably be the best thanks you could give that special someone."
