Bird welfare

FOLLOWING my attendance at the Knap Residents' meeting last Tuesday, I am now more concerned than ever about the welfare of the wild birds, swans, etc on the lake.

Cllr James stated that the lake will be emptied and cleaned but left empty for several weeks to deter the swans.

He then said that a lesser number would be 'managed.'

I would like to know how its possible to 'manage' wild birds.

The swans have been on the lake since 1935, and they will return - it's their habitat.

It was also mentioned that the council had applied for a licence to remove the swans etc. How do they intend to remove them without causing them a lot of distress?

We should welcome these birds- they are a tourist attraction; with a little more effort from the council to clean the footpaths it would be a great asset to the town.

It is much nicer to look at a lake full of wild birds than an empty lake full of rubbish.
