EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of March 3, 1955:

* The work of Mr A Q James, former secretary of the Barry Angling Society, was recognised at a special meeting on Sunday when he was presented with an angler's knife and a cheque for long and honourable service.

* Aneurin Bevan found a defender in Mr Dan Jones, the prospective Labour Party candidate for Barry, when the latter was speaking in the Barry constituency last week.

* A large audience braved the weather yesterday week to attend Miss Hilda Gill's show "Dancing Times" which was staged at the Moors Welfare Cadoxton.

* A brick wall erected by the military authorities during World War II is obstructing a footway connecting Lower Hunter Street and Lower Holmes Street, Cadoxton.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of March 6, 1980:

* Barry yachtsman and seasoned traveller, Mr Dennis Grace, enthralled the Men's Forum on Thursday with an illustrated talk on Tunisia, which had been described as a postage stamp stuck on the edge of Africa.

* Barry Theatre Royal Cinema, which has been part and parcel of the town for many years, has received a 25,000 facelift as part of a renovation plan.

* Barry Town, who joined the Southern League in 1923/24, scored their biggest ever league victory by overwhelming Wellingborough 10-2 at Jenner Park.

* A Porthcawl company's plans to open up an amusement arcade and bingo hall in the middle of Barry, which raised objections from local residents, the Barry Town Council and the Barry Chamber of Trade, have been rejected by the local planning authority.
