School patrol receive award

THE dedication and hard work of school crossing patrols across the Vale of Glamorgan was highlighted at an awards ceremony.

At the event at the Civic Offices in Barry, Cllr Tony Williams, Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member (Planning and Transportation), said: "Ensuring safety on our roads is a vitally important issue for the Council, and school crossing patrol officers are at the sharp end in helping to deliver pedestrian safety to the most vulnerable members of our communities."

Hosting the prestigious ceremony was Vale Mayor Cllr Emlyn Williams and Mayoress, Joan, who is herself a patroller.

The overall winner was Pam Griffiths (High Street, Barry).

Area winners were:

Penarth - Elaine Storey (Redlands Road)

Sully and Dinas Powys - Samantha Hatter (St Andrew's Major Church in Wales)

Barry - Ernie Ling (Cadoxton)

St Athan, Rhoose and Llantwit Major - Alex Daw (Llanilltud Fawr)

And there was a special award for Bonny Hodsell, Thelma Bolston and Betty Stears who don the crossing patrol uniform and provide the'Walking Bus' for children at Peterston-super-Ely.

No-one left the ceremony empty-handed, with every officer receiving a'goodie bag' containing a road safety calendar, diary, stationery items and tickets, donated by Jamie Morgans, Leisure Services Manager, for free swimming sessions at the Vale leisure centres.
