Vandals force centre to close

VANDALS who have repeatedly targeted the Red Cross Day Centre on Barry Island forced the facility to close after the latest attack.

And staff there say they are appalled by the constant problems caused by the vandals.

Centre manager Sharon Stevens said: "Our day-care centre on Barry Island has again been vandalised, causing us to shut our doors to needy people for two days.

"At Christmas time we had our windows put through, and last week it happened again.

"They have also smashed the windows of our minibus, which is vital for providing the services we offer."

The Barry Island centre on Brakesea Drive looks after some 15 elderly people each day.

Without the support of the Red Cross, they would have to go into residential care.

"We allow elderly people in Barry and other parts of the Vale to continue living at home," added Sharon.

"It's beyond me why anyone would want to target a charity.

"I think the people responsible mainly come from the Island.
