Policeman killed

A BARRY policeman was killed on his motorbike in an accident on Five Mile Lane.

Daniel Paul Thomas, aged 34 and known as Paul, died when his blue Honda VFR800 motorcycle was invoved in a collision with a Red Seat Arosa at around 7.30pm on Sunday, February 20.

He was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where he was pronounced dead.

Mr Thomas lived in Bridgend. He was married to Claire and had a 16-month-old daughter, Emily. He enjoyed mountain biking and rock climbing.

In a statement, Paul's family said: "Paul was a kind and loving man. He was outgoing and lived life to the full. He always thought of others before himself.

"He was a devoted and wonderful husband, an adoring father, and a more loving son, son-in-law and brother than anyone could wish for.

"His loss will leave a void in our lives that cannot be described in words; we will love him always."

Paul joined the South Wales Police in June 1998 and was stationed at Barry Police Station.

Superintendent Josh Jones, Divisional Commander for the Vale of Glamorgan, said: "Paul was a well-respected and popular colleague who contributed so much to policing in the Vale of Glamorgan.

"He was a family man who will be greatly missed by both colleagues and loved ones."

Vale MP John Smith said: "I am saddened to hear of this tragic death. I campaigned and succeeded in getting the speed limit reduced to 40mph on that road.

"However, the road is still clearly dangerous and I hope that it will be improved when the Welsh Assembly takes it on as a trunk road."
