EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of February 10, 1955:

* The need for more civil defence volunteers was expressed in speeches made at the Barry Docks Office on Thursday.

* Ken Crane, 24-year-old son of Mr and Mrs AJ Crane, Colcot Road, Barry, who was last week called up for his National Service, has passed his law finals and is now a qualified solicitor.

* At the Tynewydd Road Social Guild on Tuesday week, a beetle drive was held, when the hall rang with laughter as some of the drawings were displayed. Stan Eveleigh acted as MC.

* After the short respite afforded by the "holiday week" at Christmas time, arrears of rent owed by tenants of Barry's 2,591 houses have again reached record proportions.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of February 14, 1980:

* A former pupil of Holton Road and Barry Grammar Schools, William T Grant B Eng, C Eng, MIEE, FBIM, has been appointed technical director of Hawker Siddeley Power Plant Limited.

* A canister found on the beach at Barry Island on Thursday and thought to contain a poisonous substance turned out to be nothing more than an old compressed air cylinder.

* A Barry florist Miss Hilary West of Bayfield Nurseries, Colcot Road, Barry, will take part in "Thousands of Flowers", a major event this year.

* The Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council, who took over the responsibility for town twinning upon local government reorganisation, now want to hand over the task to local community councils.
