50 YEARS AGO - EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of February 3, 1955:

* Mr Tom Carpenter, recently retired docks manager at Barry, was presented with a watch by Mr A E H Brown, chief dock manager of South Wales docks, on behalf of the British Transport Commission, at a lunch at the Park Hotel, Cardiff.

* Miss Doris Matthews, headmistress of Holton Road Secondary Modern School, was the guest speaker at the Tynewydd Road Social Guild on Tuesday week.

* A young Barry boxer, who did not take up the fistic art until he joined the RAF some two-and-a-half years ago, won the RAF featherweight championship of the Canal Zone with a knock-out at Ismalia recently.

* Mr Ray Evans, well-known in Barry as secretary of the Barry Athletic Bowls Club, has been appointed assistant dock manager at Barry Docks, in succession to Mr G F Jones, who has been appointed assistant docks manager, Cardiff.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of February 7, 1980:

* A number of this year's Open University graduates come from the Barry area. They include Mr Ivor Arnold, a 50-year-old school teacher at Barry Boys' Comprehensive School, of Glen Mavis Way, Barry.

* Mrs Joan Kruger, who has held office as either secretary or chairman of the Barry Floral Decoration Society since its formation in 1962, was presented with a Denbigh china ornament when she recently retired from the office of chairman at the society's AGM.

* Police Sergeant Davies, Police Constable Collingson and police dog Carl, from the Bridgend headquarters, were involved in a talk on "The use of Police Dogs" to members of the St Nicholas Darby and Joan Club last week.

* Elwyn Richards (Sea View Labour Club) is among 10 of the top 10 amateur snooker players in Wales competing in the HTV tournament.
