Petition to safeguard community against risk head

A PETITION has been launched in objection to proposed mobile phone masts which are planned for a built up area.

Residents, councillors and MP John Smith have all added their signatures to the 500 strong petition against the planned masts next to Bryn Hafren School on Merthyr Dyfan Road.

Vale of Glamorgan MP, John Smith said: "We want to put a stop to this being put up. We should think safety first before anything. There will be a concentration of emissions in this area if the three masts are erected.

"These masts have higher radiation levels than old ones which did not send video or picture messages."

Headmaster of Bryn Hafren School, Phil Whitcombe does not want the two masts to be put in Stumpy Reservoir next to the school. The third mast is planned for land on a nearby golf course. He said: "We are not against mobile phones because we all use them. We want the assurance that there is no long term risk with the children."

Councillor Rob Curtis, Vale of Glamorgan Council and Barry Town Council member said: "All the Labour councillors for the Gibbonsdown ward are united in opposing this planning application.

"I am seriously concerned that the positioning of this mast outside one of the Vale of Glamorgan's largest schools. It could present a future health threat to pupils and residents alike.
