Barry under-tens raise their game

Following their comprehensive defeat by Rumney a fortnight ago, Barry under-tens bounced back last week with a home 26-17 win over St Albans. Thus, Barry approached their pre-Christmas match with Sully in confident mood, but in the knowledge that they would be required to raise their game another level if they were to come away from with a victory on a cold and snowy morning.

A'cracker' of an individual try from Barry's outside centre David Parkes in the closing five minutes earned the visitors victory, in what turned out to be a closely fought and exhilarating game played with great imagination by both teams behind the scrum.

A number of missed tackles in Barry's defense in the opening exchanges allowed the Sully fly half to waltz through for the opening try. Sully continued to look the sharper team in the first half, being more incisive and probing more options, taking a 12-0 lead.

However, all season Barry's backs have devastated opponents with attacks coming from all angles, under the marshalling of fly half Kyle Barros. Once again it was Barry's'Bulldog' Sam Roberts scoring his 12th try of the season just prior to half time with some powerful and pacey running that got the visitors back into the match, just after the referee had disallowed what appeared to have been Barry's opener, again from Roberts.

So Barry turned around 10 points adrift, with the omens not promising, despite their late converted try, but from Roberts try onwards Barry simply got better and better. Luke O'Sullivan regularly penetrated the blind side, tearing into Sully's defense, inspiring his colleagues and scoring Barry's second try.

Kyle Barros soon struck for Barry under the posts with a well-worked'backs' try, followed by a second from O'Sullivan powering through three tackles. Barry's fifth try saw David Parkes sprint solo for nearly 70 meters, beating five defenders for an outstanding individual try, giving Barry the lead for the first time with just five minutes of the match remaining.

Barry always happy to convert a defensive position into counter-attack, underlined this quality in the dying seconds of the game, which again had it's origins in their own 22 and ended with Barros securing the second of his two tries. John Draper won the ball from the maul, fed Sam Roberts who broke through the tackle, for Barros to dummy, first outside then inside, beating two defenders to sprint for the corner and seal the game for Barry.

A terrific match played in a festive spirit, with some high-class performances from both sides.

So the end of an altogether promising first half to the season for Barry under-tens, playing in total ten matches, winning seven and losing three; outscoring their opponents by 34 tries to 21.
