BARRY Dragons Tae Kwon Do Club were recently invited to take part in an evening of full contact kickboxing, held at the Coal Exch-ange, Cardiff. The event was organised by Denzil Lawrence and Spiro Micalles, of the Cardiff Kickboxing Club.
The Dragons are no strangers to full contact, already having four WUMA area champions.
Jace Hughes, Richard Palfrey, Ashley Coles, Mark Palfrey, Abigail Palfrey, Jadine Procope and Conor Woodfin all travelled to Cardiff, but on the night only Conor Woodin and Richard Palfrey were able to get matched up, both having their first full contact fights.
Conor did well in the first round, but his stronger opponent took control in the second and third rounds to win a unanimous points decision.
Richard Palfrey also took a share of the first round, but his power of punch started to tell in the second. The third round was also very close but at the end of three hard 90 second rounds Richard took a close majority decision.
The fact that Tae Kwon Do students can cross over into a totally different style of fighting shows how adaptable their sport can be.
Anybody interested in Tae Kwon Do can call in to the YMCA on Tuesdays from 5pm to 7pm, Thursdays 6pm to 8pm, Saturdays 5pm to 7pm, or call club instructor Colin Palfrey on Barry 406971 or mobile 07786497038.
