Anger at Sully's move to Cardiff

SULLY residents are up in arms because the area is to join the South Cardiff constituency.

The village councillors, AM and MP were against the idea to change the constituency boundary, but even a publiic inquiry which concluded in their favour did not stop the change.

Sully Community Council chairman Janice Boland said: "I don't think the inquiry made a difference to the outcome. It is a disgrace we are put in with Cardiff.

"Some people are under the impression that they are no longer under the Vale of Glamorgan Council, but that is not the case. We will be in the Cardiff South and Penarth constituency."

Vale of Glamorgan Council member for Sully Anthony Ernest said: "The decision has come as huge blow to local residents who had fought bitterly against the move to sideline the village into the artificially-sized Cardiff constituency, purely to satisfy the numbers game."

"The reality is that Sully and Lavernock have not the slightest thing in common with South Cardiff, which extends as far as the boundary with Newport at St Mellons and also includes Tremorfa, Llanrumney, Splott, Cardiff Docks and Grangetown.

"A public inquiry was held in the summer at which we were supported by Sully Community Council, Penarth Town Council, the Vale of Glamorgan County Council, John Smith, MP, and Jane Hutt, AM.

"The inquiry commissioner recommended that there should be no change to the boundaries of Sully.

"It is now clear that the Boundary Commission, despite overwhelming evidence against the move, has decided to proceed with its original proposal.

"Sully's move into Cardiff South and Penarth was confirmed, to the dismay of the 3,200 electors of this pleasant rural area, who will be affected.

"This decision strikes at the very heart of this small community."
