New measures help pupils to cross road

CADOXTON Primary pupils will find it safer crossing the road to get to class because of new traffic measures which have been introduced.

The school now has a 20mph limit outside the building and speed bumps have been put in place to stop motorists speeding.

Since 1999 the school has been trying to get safety measures put in place.

Headmaster Chris Myers said: "We are delighted that this has been finished. We as a school have been trying for years to make the road safer. We have problems with parking and children being dropped off."

A governor and a Vale of Glamorgan councillor, Fred Johnson said: "It has taken too long to sort this out. Something should have been done about this road a long time ago. Only two years ago a boy was injured on the road. Thankfully he was not seriously hurt, but that was only sheer luck. There should be more areas with 20mph speed limits such as from the junction of Victoria Park Road to the junction of Main Street.

"Parents are worried about the parking situation because many people ignore the restrictions and park where they like."

Chief Road Safety Officer for the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Mike Dacey said: "We had a budget of 40,000 for the improvements. We also ran a competition for pupils. They had to draw a sign which could be used to warn road users of the restrictions. If we have enough money left we want to erect shelters for parents to stand in while waiting for their children."

Three pupils designs were used. The winners were Sophie McKinnon, Jasmine Vincent and Rosie Conway. They were given goody bags and framed copies of their work.
