Magical night with the stars

A BARRY magician was part of the historic Welsh Millennium Centre opening when he entertained the stars at the after-party.

Peter Hopkins, from Princes Street, baffled the likes of Sir Ian McKellan with his magic tricks.

The 35-year-old was invited to perform at the event's party which was filled with local and internationally recognised stars.

He said: "There aren't many people who can say they baffled Gandolf (Sir Ian McKellan) with magic. He was such gentleman.

"It was strange to go up to people and recognise them when they turned around.

"Before I performed at the centre I did not know who would be in the room. It was a well-guarded secret because of the heightened security on the night."

Other famous faces at the celebration were Jonathan Price, Derek Jacobi, Robert Hardy and Shirley Bassey.

The centre in Cardiff Bay cost 104 million to build. Peter said: "I think it is worth it because it is a great venue. I have promised my wife, Bethan, that we will go to the Australian ballet."
