Film studies goes on set

BARRY Comprehensive students spent time studying the film industry at one of the most famous studios in the world.

Eight Film and Media students from the sixth form spent just over a week in Hollywood, starting from October 19.

This was the second trip of its kind for Barry Comprehensive School. Organised by teacher Jane Edwards, the trip took in all the aspects of the Television and Film Industry.

The students got to tour classic film-studio sets at Universal Studios where they also got to see working sound stages where The Scorpion King, Jurassic Park, The Hulk and other blockbuster movies were filmed.

The students also got to explore the world famous Warner Brothers Studio, where they visited the Warner Bros Museum - an archive of filmed entertainment history. They also got to visit the studios backlot sets, sound stages and craft/production shops.

The best part of the tour was investigating a live sound stage for hit TV series The Gilmore Girls.

The trip covered all phases of the movie-making process, from examining preliminary sketches and costumes for films like Star Trek and Ben Hur at the Hollywood Entertainment Museum, to learning about make-up and lighting at the Hollywood History Museum. The highlight of this tour was when the students got the chance to examine the actual prison set for Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs'.

The students also got the chance to see two TV programmes (The Jimmy Kimmel Show, and World Cup Comedy) being filmed as part of the live studio audience.

Away from the media aspect the students also got the chance to experience the real Holly-wood. Apart from the star-ridden Rodeo Drive and Bel Air, they witnessed the separation of wealth in Hollywood with the shocking number of homeless people begging over the stars of the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame.
