BARRY'S war heroes were honoured last weekend in the Remembrance Day services.
On Sunday, local dignitaries including the Mayor June Germon, Assembly Member Jane Hutt and Police Chief Supt Josh Jones, gathered in the cold but sunny King Square to begin the march to the Civic Offices.
After laying wreaths of poppies at the Merchant Navy monument, the Barry ATC 372 Sqd band lead the procession on to the Memorial Hall for a special service.
As part of the ceremony Rev Sue O'Hare read out the names of the soldiers in Black Watch who recently lost their lives during conflict in the Middle East.
At 11am the two minutes silence began, and held a certain poignancy this year. The congregation fell quiet after the Last Post was sounded and the standards were dipped to remember our troops on active duty. The bugler then sounded'Reveille' and the standards were raised as the wreaths were laid on the stone monument.
The Mayor and the representative for the President of the Royal British Legion stepped forward and placed their offerings together on the west face of the Cenotaph. They were followed by representatives of other services as they laid their wreaths around the stone pillar.
The congregation then filed inside the Memorial Hall for a continuation of the service.
Similar ceremonies were held across the Vale, at Dinas Powys, Rhoose, Llantwit Major and Penarth.
