Awards given at club's 20th

Barry West End Cricket Club were so proud to celebrate their 20th anniversary. Players Adrian White 295 games, Neil Davis 325 games, Mark Ewington 336 games, Barrie Malpas 354 games, Glan WIlliams 378 games, Rhys Thomas 387 games, Mark Williams 406 games, Pinky Edwards 423 games, Tommy Miller 471 games, Keith Nokes 496 games, Keith Miller 584 games, Neil Holmes 611 games, along with the contributions of Andrew Callaghan, Jeff Holmes, Barrie James, Chris Lane, David Miller, Peter Smith and Dave WIlliams are the main reasons for this.

To commemorate this remarkable feat the club held a memorable presentation evening at the Mount Sorrel Hotel recently. Members old and new gathered together along with friends from Barry Wanderers Cricket Club, Barry Athletic Cricket Club and Wenvoe Cricket Club.

Guests for the evening were Peter Hellyar (chairman of Barry Athletic Cricket CLub) and his wife Fran.

Before an excellent meal, grace was administered by John Murphy, first guest back in 1984.

The formalities of the evening were kicked off by club chairman Glan Williams who welcomed friends and guests and gave a brief history of Barry West End Cricket Club. He also mentioned apologies for absent frirends and remembered past colleagues who have sadly passed on. One noteable absentee was Richard Goldsworthy of Ynysandre Cricket Club who sent a recorded message and a commemorative trophy which was an extremely nice gesture and one the club will never forget.

Glan then passed the mic over to club captain Mark Ewington for the presentations for 2004. The captain thanked his team for their efforts over the past season especially to three people. Glan Williams for his organisation off the field, Keith Nokes the treasurer to whom all are eternally grateful, and to his vice captain Nye Cane whose help on and off the field was exceptional.

The first award of the evening was a special award and was presented by Mike Ashton of Barry Wanderers to bowler Chris Cane who took a hattrick against Barry Wanderers this year at the Sully Hospital ground.

The remaining awards for 2004 were presented by guest for the evening Peter Hellyar.

Special Achievement 150 dismissals - Pinky Edwards.

All present then enjoyed an evening of dancing, drinking and reminiscing well into the small hours. Even the raffle was huge success. Finally the club would like to thank the Mount Sorrel for helping them achieve such a special evening.

Barry Athletic Cricket Club - without access to their facilities Barry West End Cricket Club would never have dreamed of celebrating 20 years.

Neil Holmes - opening bat and transport manager who has ferried the team around South Wales (and beyond) without who the club would probably not survive.

And last but by no means least, Mark Ewington and Glan WIlliams who organised the whole event and made it an evening to remember.
