Our Delilah never sounded so good

A BARRY neighbourhood literally banded together to collect cash for the national charity event Children in Need.

The Colcot Community Project held a non-stop sponsored Karaoke Night on Monday, to bring in money for the BBC-run fund-raiser, which will be aired live on television and radio tomorrow night.

From 4pm to 7pm, the microphones were red hot as children and a few foolhardy adults took to the floor to warble out the all-time sing-along classics, including a hearty version of Delilah.

With the usual spirit shown by the Colcot Community Project, nearly 30 children took part in the fun, some brave souls singing solos, others getting together as duets and when all else failed - everyone crowded around the machine to give each other moral support.

Among the supervisors who took a turn on the mike themselves were Sarah Duddridge, Project Manager Rosie McGuigan, Vale Play Development Officer David Beadle and a couple of the children's mums.

Many of the young singers were from Colcot Primary School and took sponsor forms with them before enjoying the special evening.

Refreshments, including delicious hot-dogs, were on offer and prizes were awarded to all who entered, donated by the Spar on Winston Road. The Colcot Community Project would like to thank the children who helping raise money for Children in Need.

So far they have raised 150 and money is still coming in. Making their pledge tomorrow night, staff hope to see the Colcot Community Project name scrolled across the screen.

Sarah Duddridge, of the project, said: "We would like to say a big thank you to the Play Development officer David Beadle for his contribution to helping the children enjoy the evening with balloons and the use of the digicam to capture these moments.

"The Colcot Project is situated on Winston Road, Barry. All are welcome to come and see what we have on offer to the local community."
