A mass of red shirts filled Colcot Primary School on Monday, March 1, 2004, as the children waited patiently for the procession of the 'Gorsedd' (members of the court).
As they approached in their white gowns, the younger children looked on in wonder as the 'Chairing of the Bard' ceremony began with traditional singing.
Pupils in Year 6 sat in anticipation of winning the title and the honour of sitting on the golden throne.
The poems this year were themed, 'My Wales' and the headmaster, Mr Richards commented: "It was a difficult competition to judge as so many of the poems captured the beauty and spirit of Wales."
The children had scrolled their poems and the hall was silent when the best, 'Menai,' was announced.
The winning verse had been penned by 10-year-old Isabelle Hartrey, who was escorted to the chair, wearing the honorary cloak.
The winning streak continued as children throughout the school took part in writing and art competitions, based on Welsh myths, winning points for their school house.
The winning house, 'Gareth' was presented with a silver shield.
