LABOUR'S New Deal is the biggest and most successful assault on long-term unemployment ever mounted by any government cutting youth unemployment by 76 percent. Wales now tops the UK league for creating and safeguarding employment, helping us to create jobs much faster than the UK as a whole.

In fact, Wales now has a lower rate of unemployment than the USA, Canada, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain! Locally, this consistent attack on the scourge of unemployment has transformed the community which I represent. Children on the Gibbonsdown estate are growing up thinking that getting a job is better than a lifetime on benefit.

You can imagine my anger and frustration then, when I learn that the Conservatives will, if they win the next General Election, abolish the New Deal. They still believe that going back to the madness of high unemployment is a price worth paying - what lunacy!
