DVD Review - Van Helsing

VAN HELSING stars Hugh Jackman, Kate Beckinsale and is about the mythical vampire hunter tracking down the vampire Dracula.

Arriving in the dark and cursed Transylvania in the late 19th Century, Van Helsing is sent by the Vatican on his latest mission to vanquish all evil as he takes on the evil Count Dracula. He encounters the misunderstood Frankenstein's Monster and a doomed werewolf after teaming up with a gypsy princess to find they both have a score to settle.

The special effects are tremendous and there's a thunderously dramatic soundtrack. But both these factors sadly overwhelm the under-whelming acting. Roxburgh is terrible as the vile count. There is, however, a sprinkling of good-natured humour and a few decent action sequences and the film warms up towards the end. A bit of a disappointment, to be honest.
