50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of October 7, 1954:

The annual inspection of the Barry Red Cross Society took place last Friday, by Lieut-Col H H Nuttall, acting county director.

Despite bad weather on Tuesday night, about 200 pensioners were present at the Memorial Hall for a concert given by Gwen Gaye's Concert Party in connection with the local celebrations for Welsh Old People's Week.

Despite keen competition from a number of British shipyards, a South Wales ship-repairing firm, Mountstuart Dry Docks Ltd, has secured a contract that will mean months of work for a large number of men at Barry Graving Dock.

With Jenner Park rain-sodden as a result of the weather of the past few days, Barry Town players had a workout on the sands at Barry Island on Tuesday.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of October 11, 1979:

The environmental health committee of the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council has expressed concern to the authority's leisure services committee about the problem of weed growth on footpaths and verges.

Past pupils of Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School have continued to distinguish themselves at university and a number have gained honours degrees, they are Annabel Baker (history, Nottingham), Penny Barton (geology, Cambridge), Dawn Harding (psychology, Brunel), and Janice Hawkins (engineering, Loughborough).

Barry's MP Sir Raymond Gower paid a recent visit to the BP Chemicals plant at Barry and saw the firm's high speed PVC bagging line, which got first prize in a national competition.
