50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of September 30, 1954:

The Garden Suburb Tenants' Association held their fifth annual Arts and Crafts and Garden Produce Show in Saturday when the opening ceremony was performed.

A footpath leading to Coldbrook from Victoria Park was described at a meeting of the Public Works Committee on Monday, by Cllr Mrs A O Yeoman, as being in "a shocking condition."

A complaint that a brown gritty substance was being found in the water supply at Barry Island was made at a meeting of the Water Committee on Friday.

Four pupils of St Helen's School have been successful in obtaining the Royal Life-Saving Swimming Intermediate Certificates. They are Danny Hayes, Kenneth Martell, Ernest Whyman and Bernard Wiltshire.

Competitors in the Welsh Open Sea Fishing Championships held at Porthkerry beach at the weekend found conditions so rough on Saturday that it was a test of endurance as well as skill.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of October 4, 1979:

Professional diver Alan Stackman, aged 36, plumbed the depths of an ancient well at the Captain's Wife public house at Sully on Saturday to find the truth behind a legend which says that smugglers used a secret tunnel under the well which dates back to medieval times.

Two local boxing officials distinguished themselves recently in examinations held by the European Boxing Board to draw up a panel of referees and judges for the forthcoming European and Olympic tournaments.

Residents worried about the electrical wiring in their homes at Dudley Place, Barry, following a recent fire, have called on the Vale Council to check all the houses and make any necessary repairs.

Angler Raymond Gifford, of Glebeland Place, St Athan, caught an 8lb 5oz mullett with a bait of garden worm off Porthcawl recently, and was reported by a leading angling journal as the best mullett caught in Britain this year.
