Five pubs join forces to oust rowdy boozers

FIVE pubs are joining forces to ban troublemakers from going in their premises by running the first Pubwatch in Barry.

The Colcot Arms, The College Inn, Cwm Cidi, The Tynewydd Inn and Barry Town Football's bar have banded together to make their own Pubwatch.

Joining the scheme was the idea of the landlord of Barry Town Football's bar, Mike Stringer. He said: "We want our customers to feel safe when they come to the bar. If a person is barred for being too rowdy and causing trouble we can ring around all the other members of the watch and warn them. We will give out a description of the person or persons so that the other pubs can stop these people causing trouble in their premises."

Licensing Officer PC Dave Bennett said: "We provide the posters which can be put up in the bars to tell people about the scheme.

"We will also have meetings with the members of public houses to discuss any problems which may occur or any other information which they want to put forward. We can offer advice to the members.

"Another scheme in Llantwit Major has proved successful in the town centre."

Cwm Cidi Manager, Duncan Cooper said: "I have managed eight pubs around the country. I find this scheme is very useful to use and it has helped in the past."

Pub landlords have a list of other pubs phone numbers if they need to contact another member of the group. Photographs of the people cannot be displayed as it is against the human rights of the person.

There is already a similar scheme running in Broad Street with the clubs and pubs there called Clubwatch.

Pubwatch was started on Wednesday September 15 at the launch in Barry Town Football Club's bar.

Mr Stringer said: "Anyone threatening violence, causing damage or does anything drug related in the pubs will be banned."
