'I'm being fined for car I've never had'

A BARRY grandfather faces a visit from the bailiffs after being heavily fined by Transport for London.

But Peter Selby, has never been to the city nor owned the car that clocked up the congestion charges.

The 65-year-old, who no longer works due to ill health, has been sent a bill for £240 by Transport for London. This money is for two fines which were clocked up by a Vauxhall Cavalier driver.

The Bassett Street resident is astounded the bills have been sent to him. He told the News: "I have never been to London and I have never owned the car. If I did have the registration I would surely receive information about the vehicle.

"I have sent a response to the London congestion people but they are still insisting that I own the car. I have owned a cavalier but with a different registration number."

Mr Selby has also been in contact with the DVLA to find out why the car has his details on the registration documents but has had little response. He said: "It seems that I have only one option left to stop anymore fines coming to me. In the end it will cost me money which I cannot afford. I am trying to obtain legal aid to go to court but that is not guaranteed.

"I want to know how and why this fine is coming to my house. I want to find out who signed the documents for this car because I certainly did not."

A Transport for London spokesperson said: "We have received representations and will investigate fully. We will then respond in due course with our findings. Should a vehicle owner receive a penalty charge notice which they believe they have received incorrectly, they should make a written representation to us.

"We are dependent on the vehicle keeper information provided to us by the DVLA, should this information be incorrect, then penalty notices can sometimes be issued to the incorrect owner.

"However, this only happens in a small proportion of cases."
