Snooker pro takes on language challenge

BARRY snooker professional Anthony Davies from Barry, takes on the challenge of learning Welsh this week in S4C's series for Welsh learners Welsh in a Week.

Anthony, who lives with his wife Samantha and three children, is placed 26 in the world rankings and holds master classes at his local club, but he is often snookered when his younger clients turn around and speak to him in Welsh!

During the programme, presenter Nia Parry teaches Anthony some useful phrases to use in his daily life at home and at the snooker club. He successfully buys some food at his local Delicatessen and also conducts an interview with sports commentator Geraint Jones, in Welsh.

Anthony says, "Although I can speak a little Welsh I feel much more confident after my week of Welsh challenges. My time with Nia has brought my confidence back. Hopefully I'll be making a call to Cardiff University to get on one of their Welsh courses very soon!"

Nia Parry hopes more people will be inspired to learn the language after viewing Anthony's experience.

"This is the fourth series of Welsh in a Week and previous series have definitely proved that learning Welsh can be fun," says Nia. "This time, we're placing more emphasis on using the language in situations outside the classroom to see how learners get on out and about in their communities. Instead of working towards one major task at the end, they'll face a number of smaller situations throughout the week. In each programme, we'll also be profiling an experienced learner."

Anyone interested in following in Anthony's footsteps can send off for a free Welsh learners' pack on how and where to learn Welsh.
