MP's plea over BT phoneboxes

BARRY's loss of six payphones has angered Vale of Glamorgan MP John Smith.

The Westminster man has hit out after a British Telecom review looks set to mean the end of a telephone box on every corner.

He said: "It is my opinion that these phones provide an important public service, particularly for areas with low telephone access.

"I also think that the telephones are crucial in the event of an emergency. I have written to BT expressing my feelings that these payphones should be retained by BT. I'm also keen to hear what other people think on the matter. Whether you support BT's move or you oppose it, let me know."

The phone boxes which are set to be taken away are as follows :- one on Friary Road and Paget Road junction, Meggitt Road, Holton Road and George Street junction, Moulton, Dryden Terrace and Fonmon.

BT's nationwide review of phone boxes began in April 2002 and will be largely completed by the end of 2005. The company is consulting with borough, district, parish, town and community councils about plans to remove a number of payphones which it believes are no longer needed.

It is also placing notices in those kiosks. BT would like to reduce the number of phone boxes in South Wales by 185.

They are also working with a number of local authorities to enhance access to public services by converting basic voice payphones to advanced high-speed multimedia kiosks.

Director of BT Payphones, Paul Hendron said: "We recognise that people in South Wales may have concerns about our plans to reduce the number of payphones, but I would like to reassure them that BT is still committed to the service, particularly for the communities who need us most. We will manage the changes sensitively through extensive consultation with local representatives."
