Four-some result

Record: Dramatic last shot as Ruth becomes first to win four finals OVER the past weekend Rhoose Bowling Club held their Championship Finals. One member Ruth May was a finalist in four competitions so one final had to be held on Friday evening.

This was the two wood singles final for ladies where Ruth faced Val Lovering. During the game each player was ahead at some time but Ruth eventually won by 16 shots to 10.

The men's final on Saturday morning was a somewhat one-sided game in which a father and son were opponents. Clive Collins was partnered by Les Parsons junior, and they faced Anthony Parsons and Lyn Willmot. Clive and Les built up a lead and won by 28 shots to 13.

The ladies' pairs was Ruth May and Trixie Evans against Kit Parsons and Helen Stevens which Ruth and Trixie just managed to win by 13 shots to 11 on the final end.

In the mixed pairs, Ruth May partnered by young player David Booker faced Betty Green and Eddie Morris. This was again a very tight game that was only decided on the final end, with Ruth and David winning by 17 shots to 15.

So far it was three wins out of three for Ruth. The big question was could she win her last and fourth final.

This was the ladies' four wood singles against Margaret Morris. It seemed that Ruth was tiring as Margaret took a 6-0 lead.

By the final end Margaret needed just one shot to win. She was holding this all important shot when Ruth, with her final wood, took the jack back to her own wood, so winning by 21 shots to 20. In so doing she became the first lady member to win four finals in one year.

The men's four wood singles saw old antagonists Steve Booker and Clive Collins facing each other. Clive finally won after 27 ends 21-16.

The President's Shield, awarded to the best singles player in the Club, went to Clive because of the large margin by which he won his semi final singles match. Club President Harry Stradling presented the trophies congratulating the finalists on the very high standard.
